Have you seen the information on the CES website relating to employment of chaplains?

The National Standards document plus the job descriptions are in the Employment Documents section, under Chaplaincy Documents. The advice about salary is in the CES Document User Guide, page 27 (also found in the same section).  Do please check these documents with your own contracts / job descriptions and particularly the advice on salary. The Bishops' are very clear that these documents should be used, so they might be useful for any conversation your line manager or senior school leaders.

Vocations Sunday

To mark vocations Sunday (4th Sunday of Easter), Missio have created a secondary school assembly providing a broader look at our call to be missionaries of God's love. Importantly the assembly references the Youth Poll commissioned by the Vatican in advance of 2018's General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, covering the theme "Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment".

A link to the poll is included in the assembly - Eastertide Vocation Assembly - and students from the ages of 13+ are encouraged to take part.

To download the assembly please visit:

New Lenten resources for members added from a Primary School chaplain. Please get in touch if you have some resources to share.

Are you planning for Lent? I'm sure chaplains everywhere are planning liturgies and prayer sheets and Lenten activities.

You are our best resource; I know there's a wealth of experience amongst chaplains, so if you've found something useful for Lent this year, please share - maybe a song, a prayer or a new online resource? Just click on the email us link above and we'll do the rest.

Don't forget to use our links to Missio and CAFOD as well and check out their resources.

Looking for resources to celebrate the end of the Year of Mercy or Advent?

CAFOD have some key resources that will help you with both. Mission Together have Advent resources for primary schools on their website, www.missiontogether.org.uk or click on the logo on our links page.

The Missio website now has a bank of resources suitable for secondary schools, missio.org.uk or again, use our link.

In response to a recent article by Sr Judith Russi in The Tablet, about pupil chaplains we submitted the following response which was printed. As you know, we feel chaplaincy teams made up of pupils are an asset to a school and an essential part of a chaplain's role, our concern is with the description, 'pupil chaplain'.

Pupil Power

Under the guise of addressing the shortage of school chaplains, Sr Judith Russi advocates using pupil power. ACCE (the Association of Catholic Chaplains in Education) is also concerned about the recruitment and employment of school chaplains and finds that where chaplaincy posts are available with appropriate pay scales and conditions, suitable candidates do exist.

We also agree that the development of a chaplaincy team, including pupils, is an important asset in building up the Catholic life of the school. Indeed many school chaplains would consider setting up such a team an essential element of their role. However the title 'pupil chaplains' is open to considerable misinterpretation both by pupils and their teachers. A chaplaincy team led by an adult, preferably a school chaplain, must always be the standard to which all schools should aim.
